Modern Day Slavery History 9

Lost In Fear

Modern day slavery is a major problem in the world today. Human trafficking and things such as sex slaves in other countries and the US are still happening today and the numbers are at an all time high. There are approximately 27 million slaves in the world today for various reasons. The reason for the amount of slaves today is that the price has gone down to an average of about $90 per a slave. Slavery is currently in every part of the world even if you don’t know about it. For instance slaves can be working in a restaurant if they have to pay back money that is impossible to repay. Slave owners like moments like these because they aren’t technically slaves, but it will never be possible to pay back all that they owe to that person.

Also some slaves are put where they are because their parents sell them into slavery for whatever money they can get. They are put in desperate situations where they have to make the decision of what to do and some parents choose to sell their child for the money they need to survive. Some parents don’t even have an option their families are just split up and most of the time they never see each other again.

Once a slave is not as productive at work the slave owner sells them away or just plain throws them out on the street. They are used like trash once they have no use to them anymore you either dispose of it or sell it for a cheap price. This is why slavery is constantly increasing in todays world. The thing about slavery though is that it is bad for the economy overall even though it is good for the one slave owner. It is bad because the slaves aren’t paying money to the businesses of the city or country because they aren’t being paid so there is just a couple of people with lots of money than lots with little to nothing.

Slave owner todays also use words like property or just people who have to make some payments. No human should be treated as property because everybody is created equal. If they are people who need to make “some payments” in slavery it really means that they have a never ending payment that they work their entire life along with their family to “pay it off”. This is illegal and needs more people cracking down on it because when others see that it is not okay and that you will get in trouble if you do it they will stop or the ones who don’t stop will be caught later if we put effort into it.

The slave I researched, Helia is an escape who had a horrible life. She faced many of the struggles that other slaves face. When Helia was only 5 years old her mom passed away. Her grandmother took her in, but unfortunately died 2 years later. Helia had no place to go so her neighbor told Helia she could stay at her house. Of course Helia payed the price. Her neighbor made her do all the work in the house. She worked fast unless she was beaten or used for sex. Her neighbor was very abusive to Helia and Helia finally had the courage to tell someone from the town about it. The town was outraged and they demanded Helia go to school and treated better or they would burn down the neighbors house. The neighbor agreed and let her go to school. She went through more struggles throughout her life like having her
